The angle A, that is the angle which the sun makes with the horizon, is the sun's altitude. The angle Z is its zenith distance. At the equinox the noon sun is almost equal to the altitude of the Pole Star. Facts of this sort which were a part of the every day life of the Egyptians led to the construction of the calendar, one of the greatest cultural feats of antiquity.
