Sir
Since writing you on the situation I find I have been very badly deceived. I find in not having an orderly the people think or seem to think that I am powerless, or else there is something else in the wind My orders are disregarded, & I have had to do some of the straitest talking that I have had to do since I have been here. There seems to be a renewed hatred to the "niger". While I am glad to say that some I had trusted stand firm, I find others that I thought friends cannot be trusted. I do not expect a smooth sea but the elements seem to be really beligerent & some uneasiness has been expressed for my safety by a friend. I fear nothing myself unless it is secret; but I must confess I think there is something wrong. I learned today that the tavern (I spoke of) has been rented by a private individual who can have no earthly use for it but to get it out of my hands. I proposed to Mr. Contes the owner (of Richmond) some time ago to rent it but he said he had engaged it. I asked him what he asked for it, he said one thousand dollars per annum. And I was then satisfied he did not intend that we should have it. I have been waiting to see him or hear from him
