Sir,
I want to say a few words not exactly official about this place
The people here are very bitter in their feelings against the blacks as a race and seem to hope that if let alone and allowed to suffer and take care of themselves on the small sums they get for wages that they will soon die off_ I can get no aid from any in the discharge of my duties_
Some have spoken of the strong Union element in the County, but if it is here I am unable to find it they will not show themselves even Mr. Gilmon editor of the "American Union" avoided me until a week since - and then appologized by saying the feeling was so strong against me that holding union sentiments
