On Nicholson Str, the crowd became more turbulent and threatened Long with death if he did not at once release the man to their vengeance, but it was not until they had nearly reached his home, that the marshals consigned their burden, now almost dead, to the care of two footmen, who carried it into the house. At about 1 o'clock the military arrived on the field, and a strong guard was placed over the house, and the tumult quelled. During Monday night bands of white men roved through the streets, shooting every negro they could find, and uttering loud threats against every friend of the freedmen in the city. On Tuesday and for several days after a number of colored men were arrested, examined before the Mayor and committed for examination before the Corporation Court.
