He came to my office and complained. Soon after several gentlemen (I must call them gentleman) came and wanted to know what I was going to do about it. I told them his remidy was in the courts. They were very indignant because he came to me and wanted to know what I had to do with it. I told them he came to me for advice. They wanted to know if the merchant was not justifiable in "knocking" him. I said no. They asked me if I would not knock any one that would talk so to me. I said no. Well one of them said "We people of the south have so much courage we cant bear an insult we must resent it." After assuring them that I had some little courage and the people of the north had some courage and that I would not allow them to cast such reflections they immediately subsided. I draw from what I saw a disposition to bully the officers of the Gov sent here and by that means they had handled him, as the working of the bureau does not suit me. They futher said the civil rights bill is a law now let him go to that. Some time near the first of last month a Cold man was arrested on suspition and committed to jail. he told the Bureau agent Mr Davis and Lt Page that he was at the gate holding the horses when the magistrate is that (Dr Harvey) committed him his case came up on the 2d inst for hearing before the County Court and not the slightest evidence was brought against him and after lying in jail near one month & paying $[[150?]].00 lawyers fee he was set-at-large. I heard that the Com W atty [[Commonwealth attorney]] or agent tried to bribe cold witnesses to swear against him. I there no remidy for these great wrongs.
