and try to do better next year. They are generally anxious to buy a small piece of land in order to have a home of their own , but the owners of land are generally unwilling to sell to them 
as they think it will make the Freedmen too independent.

The predjudice against the education of the Freedmen has declined very remarkably in the last few months and many influential white citizens profess themselves in favor of it but I have found none as of yet who were enough in favor of the same to donate a piece of ground upon which to erect a School House All of the magistrates of Greene Co. announce themselves in the favor of educating the Freedmen and have encouraged one of the citizens of the county in offering himself as a teacher.  

None of the Freedmen in the Sub. Dist. have as yet intimated a design of procuring for themselves homesteads
