Timber being nearly all destroyed from the Rappahannock to the Rapidan Rivers - this of course renders the condition of the people both white & black more impoverished then the people of the neighboring Counties - 

The Crops are however very promising as a general thing - 
the corn crop would have been much better but for the cold weather in August. Money is very scarce in the County & will be until the products can be sent to market, which has already commenced to a considerable extent - & very liberal prices are being realized  no northern men have succeeded in purchasing land in this County during the month in fact but few have been here for that purpose. The Farmers are very desirous of selling - but I think are asking to much to encourage people from the north to come here. 

The disturbed condition of the Political affairs of the Country seem to impede a more favorable progress of this Section by immigration from the north. There being a feeling of
