I am also convinced that the agricultural interests of this portion of the country have been advanced by the change.

Those among the planters who have the independence to give expression to their honest convictions regardless of their old prejudices or the whims of others, unhesitatingly admit that where the employer has attended to his business, and the laborer treated properly, that the crops were better than during any former year. Wherever troubles are complained of, I find upon investigation, that in nine cases out of ten they are traceable to something which the employer has done, or is responsible for. In all those cases where the contracts were carefully explained, and comprehended by both parties at the start, and both in good faith complied with its provisions, both parties have been able to settle satisfactorily. It is only in those cases where small advantages are being taken of the Freedmen and where the provisions of the contract have been intentionally misrepresented or kept concealed from
