but they have never accepted my aid and appear to rather avoid contact with anything connected with the Bureau than to act in concert with it. I do not wish it to be understood that all the Magistrates are of the kind described. There are some who I believe perform their duty well and ably. Nor does all the Whites entertain these feelings of hatred of the Freedmen, it is principly confined to a certain class phrased as "poor whites" whose hatred arise from the fear that the Freedman will outstrip them in bettering their condition, whose doctrine is that the "Nigger" has not even the right to live, and whose prejudices are only equaled by their ignorance and bad morals.

Fears are entertained by many of the Freedmen, who cultivated lands during the year, that the Crop will not be sufficient to feed their families but, as I believe, the supply of labor will not exceed the demand I anticipate no destitution or suffering
