since about a month past, for food & 50 cents a Week - she was also beaten, pretty severely, and both were turned off. As these parties were not afraid of further harm I could only advise them to make their complaints before the next "Grand Jury", in March. Defendant had previously settled with the woman, but still owed the Boy. His step Father thought, though, he could get the amount due by going after it, which I told him to do, advising him if it was not paid to warrant Starkie before the March Magistrate.

On the 14th a Freedwoman working for "J.T. Foster" - white - for food & clothes for herself and two children, one of which & her husband, died in the interim; for some alleged neglect and so termed "insolences" was first struct by Mrs Foster with her fist, several times in the face; she next attempted to knock her down with a shovel, which plaintif got away from her Mrs. F. then seized upon & endeavored to throw her, but in the scuffle that ensued, she went down herself she then called for her Husband, who throwing the Freedwoman on the floor, held her firmly with his knee on her head, &c, while his wife, before several others present turned up plaintifs clothes and spanked her on her bare person, as she afterwards declared to another colored woman to her "satisfaction" & until she "nearly blistered her hand" After that the woman & her child were driven off; a part of her things thrown out of doors & the rest her feather bed, &c, seized & retained for an assumed debt. Her husband was to have received 6 1/2 bbls corn & a pair of shoes; but she never got any thing on his account & all she ever received was one article of clothing
