Many of the foolish notions and especially the delusions under which this class labored at the date named concerning their rights and privileges, claims upon their old masters &c have to a great extent been overcome, and the large majority of these people have now a more proper appreciation of their true relations to each other. and to their former masters. They are gradually awakening to the fact that their freedom has brought with it new duties and new responsibilities which has convinced them that their own advancement and well being can only be brought about by industry, economy and strict fulfillment of all their obligations. This is evident from the fact that they are as a general thing anxious to enter into contracts
