at this time I think is much more encouraging than it was one year ago.

There seems to be less distrust of each other and the manifestations of confidence &c are much more flattering- This is particularly the case among the better classes; among the lower grades of whites there is still a vast deal of bitter feeling against the race- but any pointed or marked demonstrations made to gratify this feeling is frowned upon by the prudent & reflecting men.

While there is no doubt in my mind that a large majority of the whites in this portion of the State cordially hate the negro yet a very considerable proportion of these same people do not seem disposed to impose upon him or to take advantage of him in business transactions.
