the evil disposes to cheat them in his contract to prevent him from enjoy in, in their future, his newly purchased rights, & so to central h action & especially his political power, as to m him simply the tool, & slave of of his former master, to do this they seek to intimidate him by the threat of turning him out of his home & employment, to deceive him as to who are his true friends, & in any other way which is in their power, to lead him into ruin Another fact should be stated in this connection, namely,- that while there is no open refusal to give the colored man an equal & impartial hearing in our courts, stil there is a manifest disposition to throw around this approach to these tribunals, so many dificulties as to discourage their appear to them, &, unless there is some one immediately present; to back  them in their attempt to avail themselves of legal redress, for wrongs committed against them, or frauds practiced upon them there might almost as well be no such redress provided for them, Indeed there is about as much
