They are turning their attention to the building of houses for public worship, with the prospect of success. I am glad to say that the use of "strong drink" is being done away with to a great extent, and that good health prevails among them. The "state of feeling" remains unchanged, and often shows itself in acts of violence towards the freedmen, as recent reports to this office will reveal. Also, the freedmen are more or less uneasy in view of the whites threatening "to drive them from their homes, and refusing to sell them supplies if they vote for the new constitution." But I took "immediate steps" to prevent them from being "intimidated and frightened from the polls." I shall strictly adhere to the requirements of Cir. No 9, Series 1867.

Very Respectfully
