Efforts are made to promote temperance among the Freedpeople by instructing them in its good results and warning them of the evils of intemperance. A society is organized at Wytheville called the Lincoln Temperance Society which is having beneficial influence.
Every effort is made by the leading men of the Conservative party to excite the hatred and animosity of the White against the Blacks in order to influence the vote at the coming Election. This influence is having its effect upon the labor of the community. Colored people can with the greatest difficulty find houses in which to live and the number is fast diminishing. The land owner refuses to let his land be cultivated and the white community
