Bureau of R.F. & A.L. Hd. Qurs. Asst. Sub Asst. Commissioner
3rd & 4th Divisions, 8th Sub Dist. Va. Christiansburg, Va.
June 30th 1868.

Capt. Will A Coulter USA
A A A Genl.

Capt. I have the honor to make the following report of Bureau Affairs, in the Counties of Montgomery, Pulaski, Giles, Roanoke, Craig and Floyd, (3rd & 4th Divisions, 8th Sub Dist. Va. for the month of June 1868.
The freedmen have been quietly attending to their various employments and occupations, although at a very small compensation for their services in many instances, considering the high price of grain and other productions of the soil, necessary for their support. Among the poorer classes we have found cases of real destitution and want the amount received for their labor, being insufficient to supply themselves and families with the necessaries of life. Corn ranges from $1.35 to #1.75 per bushel, and it is difficult in some sections to obtain it at any price, or account of its scarcity - most of it having been bought up and shipped to other points, while large quantities have bee used by the Distillers.
