named Cook, I think was making some remarks to a large crowd of colored people among whom were a good many white people; Mr. Cook was speaking very calmly and dispassionately, his remarks up to the time of the breaking up of the meeting, being confined entirely to the political history of the Government since its earlier periods. He was evidently a man of sense and education, without doubt more intelligent than the Conservative Nominee for the Senate in the County, which the whites, noticing concluded to break up the meeting, which they did by getting a man Licensed as an Auctioneer, to pretend to sell a horse right in the midst of the crowd, and finding that device about to fail, certain men cried out "Tar and feather him," "Down with the Negro" and other equally exciting remarks, which had the desired effect, and the meeting was ended- No fights were had, as the Colored People seemed peaceably
