In the evening a crowd of Boys (or Young Men) gathered in front of the residence of Mr Tapley Ass't [[Assurer?]] U.S. Internal Revenue and attempted to burn a Flag Staff from which Mr Tapley was accustomed to hang a U.S. Flag. Mr T. succeeded in dispersing the crowd. They however abased him in every conceivable manner and still threatened to destroy the Pole. Prev. to this time the Halyard were cut [[strikethrough]] all [[/strikethrough]] up and the pieces placed near the foot of the Pole. Mr Tapley caused the arrest of one of the parties to the attempted burning (a ringleader) and had him brought before a Magistrate. There the matter was settled. The individual making an apology for the offence. I did not feel at liberty to interfere in this case, as Mr T. was an Officer of the Gov't could of course appreciate the insult and knew the whole particulars of the case. Should any action be desired in the matter please send instructions. There are no schools now in operation in this Division. Owing to the brief period I have been here it is impossible to form a correct opinion of the condition of affairs in this vicinity.
