Respectfully returned. Mr Daniels statements are mostly untrue. The Gov't have not, or are not occupying any of his buildings: they were built by the late confederate Gov't for Hospitals and are now used as Freedmens Hospitals. only the land on which they are built is used, about one acre.

The depredations committed which he speaks of do not amount to more than cutting down of some dozen forest trees. This had to be done to supply the Hospital with fuel as our transportation was all withdrawn and none could be bought. I instructed the Surgeon to pay for this.

Every precaution possible has been used to avoid any trespass on his property. From personal investigation some days since I am convinced that Mr Daniels grievances consist more in his prejudice against the Freedmen and
