Endorsement on letter of Capt James A. Bates A.A.A.G. (L.B.3rd.V.No.122) delivers to Capt Crandon the will of Joseph Edwards (dec'd) of Orange. Co. (thro' Horace Dec'd, col'd) regrets that the case be brought before the Freedmans Court for investigation - that the result be reported.

Respty returned to Capt T.F.P. Crandon AQM & Sup't who will comply with the enclosed letter dated Jan 22nd/66 from this office- This letter directs that the case be investigated in the freedman's Court.
This does not seem to have been done. Statements from Messrs Williams and Sanford have been submitted, but none from the freedman interested in the will, which leaves the case in such a condition that the Asst Com'r is unable to take action.

Va Jan 24th/66 (B.137) remonstrating agst the action of Lieut Chase Asst Sup't &c in issuing an injunction preventing her from selling her property, on account of an alleged violation of a contract on the part of her husband, with Peter Simpson (col'd) &c &c

Respty returned to Maj Gen'l O O Howard Com'r &c with further evidence in the cases of Bowman Vs Simpson and Simpson Vs Bowman.
In the opinion of the Asst Com'r - Lieut Chase did not exceed his powers as President of the Freedmans Court in granting the Injunction against which Mrs. Bowman protests.
In accordance with this decision Lt Chase Asst Sup't has been directed to inform Mrs. Bowman that it will be necessary for her to appear before the Freedmans Court and show cause why the injunction should be dissolved- Meanwhile he has been directed to try the issue on the Bill of Complaint- while the property is held subject to the decision of the Court.
