238 War Dept Bureau &c C.B. Wilder Capt & AGM &c 273 L.R.W309 Endorsement on letter of Capt C.B. Wilder AQM &c Requests that the money advanced by Freedmen to insure good treatment by them. of animals that were turned over to Capt W for distribution among them may be returned. or its equivalent to the Freedmen, &c &c Head Qrs Asst Comr Richmond Mar 6th/66 Respty fowarded to Maj Genl O.O. Howard Com'r for instructions. The receipt of this money by Capt Wilder was without authority under any regulations of the Army known to the Asst Comr- It seems to have been taken for his personal protection. and now the books showing the amount of money paid in and from whom it was received Capt W says are lost. In one county alone Capt W says the amount was about seven hundred dollars. ($700). Shall I let Capt Wilder settle this matter with the Freedmen from his own private purse, or shall I estimate for the amount as fast as the claims can be proven, and pay them from Bureau Funds. Eastville Va Feb 24th/66 x x x x x x x In the latter part of Nov 1865 the property in question was advertised for sale to satisfy the judgements of the creditors of S.S. Nottingham. and a few days before Christmas the sale took place. Col Rush becoming the purchaser of the piece of woodland from which the 30 p's of timber were afterwards cut. The Commissioners in the case sold the property subject to the action of the Freedmens Bureau. I knew nothing of the sale till two days after it was made, but immediately upon learning of it, I warned the Commissioners that in obedience to my orders in the case, I should retain possession of the property. and warned them not to receive any of the purchase money. and although the deeds were executed by them, the Commissioners refused any money until such time as the property was properly restored by order of
