Rec'd Back April 4"/66
Halifax Co. Ho.
Halifax. Co Va
Mch 29th 1866
Respty returned with the following statement,
Dr T.J. Green Jr was a member of a Volunteer Military Company, and as the commencement of the Rebellion went with that Co to take part against the Gov't, where he remained a year, on his return here here he was acting as agent for the so called confederacy in packing stores for the use of the Southern Army. He is now mail contractor with the U.S. Gov't carrying the mail to and from this place and South Boston Va at a salary of $500 and has three Horses and one mule, the mule having been given him by an officer in Gen'l Sheridan's cavalry when they passed through here after Lee's surrender. said mule being branded U.S. from all the information I can gather after a rigid inquiry. Dr. Green is and has been in good health for many years, his appearance indicates the highest state of health.
His father (who he claims to support) is a lawyer of high ability and is and has been commonwealth attorney of the state of Va for the County of Halifax for many years.
I enclose statements sworn to before me by Isaac Cole in regard to the loss of Horse and Dental Instruments.
Dr. Green now acknowledges his loss in provisions to be less than he stated in his appeal enclosed. I can find no evidence of any loss by him of Provisions.
From all the information I can gather after a careful and rigid enquiry in the matter in my opinion the petitioner has no just claim upon the United States Govt for remunerations.
