In the Clerks office of the Hustings Court of the City of Norfolk on the 12th day of January 1849.

This Indenture was presented and with the certificates annexed of the acknowledgement thereof by John W. Merwin party thereto before two Justices of the Peace and of the privy examination and acknowledgement of the feme covert Admitted to record.

Jno = John Hustings, not Hastings John W. Merwin "feme covert" =a married woman. They would have undergone a "privy exam" to ensure that they weren't being coerced by their husbands into signing a legal document against their will.
