To Honorable Secretary of the Treasury of the United States.

The petition of Hannah W. Petty respectfully represents that she is the owner in fee simple of a certain House and Lot situate on Freemason Street in the City of Norfolk and State of Virginia, as will appear by a copy of the deed forwarded herewith. That she is now, and for many years has been, a widow. That about the first of March 1862, some months before the evacuation of Norfolk, she left for the City of Richmond, to visit her brothers who are residing there, and a brother-in-law, who managed matters connected with the guardianship of her children.

That, heretofore when she left the City of Norfolk, she had been in the habit of leaving a couple of ladies in occupancy and charge of said house with the furniture therein - that upon this occasion last referred to, she designed pursuing the same course, but upon waiting upon them, found they could not at that time move in. She therefore left it in charge
