Not meeting with an opportunity of returning under the protection of a suitable escort - under the then state of the country, I remained from home until after Genl. Lee's surrender.  Upon my arrival I found my property in the hands of the Government as abandoned where it still continues. I have committed no act of treason  I have in no way aided or abetted the rebellion - neither was my property ever abandoned, and why should its possession be longer withheld from me & I made dependent in my old age upon the charity of friends? I hope, Sir, you will not hesitate to permit me to enjoy what is legally and of right my own?
