to the city of Portsmouth Va.  My sister some time before the capture of Norfolk & Portsmouth & indeed before the commencement of hostilities, had made every preparation to attend boarding school in the State of North Carolina, but was deterred from doing so by causes of a private & personal nature.

When the rebel troops retired from the defences of Portsmouth, I was forced to accompany them.  About Two months after the occupation of Portsmouth by the United States forces, Miss F.H. Moore died (July 1862)

This lady just previous to her death requested M.W. Armistead, who is loyal & did not leave the city, to act as guardian or Agent for my sister.

At the request of Mr Armistead & my sister Mr Griffin a connexion of the family, a loyal citizen & an employee of the U.S. Government became an occupant of the property on Court Street & Mr William Ballantine of that on Glasgow Street.  My sister remained with Mr Griffin and wife for a month, & wishing to carry out the original intention to attend school in North Carolina and feeling that strong & natural affection possessed by a sister for her only brother, obtained a permit
