State of Virginia: County of Norfolk to wit.
At a court begun and held for the county of Norfolk at the courthouse on Monday the 10th day of December 1856

James Gregory Hodges, G. W. Grice, Jas. F. Crocker, D. J. Godwin, John S. White, and John Hobday Jr. baring made, signed and acknowledged 
before this court, a certificate in writing stating that they are desirous of farming a company for the purchases of a building association, which certificate is in the words and figures following to wit.
 
We the undersigned, desirous to be incorporated, certify before the worshipful justice of the county court of Norfolk county, that the name and style of our company is the "The Portsmouth Building Association", That it has for its object the purchase and sale of real estate and the building of houses and the lease, rent sale of the same for the mutual and equal benefit of its members. That the amount of  its capital stock is seventeen thousand and five hundred dollars- That the number of shares of stock is twenty five- That the amount of land to be held is five acres. That the concerns of the association are to be managed the first year by James G. Hodges, President of the association and ex officer member of the Board of Directors - by John S. White, David J. Godwin, John Hobday Jr. and George W. Grice, Directors and by Arthur E. Wilson, Cashier - and that its operations are to be carried on and conducted in the town of Portsmouth in Norfolk County in the stet of Virginia
