This is the order from my office and was issued by order of the Freedmens Court.
Mrs. Poulson has brought this case before every officer who has been on duty at this place. and as soon as I came she brought it before me. The colored man is very old and when he was worth anything, they kept him. but now he is not worth any thing for help and she wants to turn him off. he is living in an old house with about 1/2 acre of land attached to it. I have seen the place and know just how it is situated. and I do think it would be injustice to the old man to turn him off this place for he has no place to go to and having been of service to her when he could work I think he should remain where he is now. Mrs Poulson has about two hundred acres of land and she is not so bad off but that she can give this place to this old man during his life considering she has had all his best days to work for her

The Assistant Commissioner disapproves of the order of the Freedmens Court in this case as exceeding its jurisdiction. While the Bureau has required that freedmen, especially the aged and

infirm, should not be summarily removed or driven off by former owners, or the owners of the land where they reside, it has not the authority [[strikethrough]] to [[/strikethrough]] to make a prescriptive order for their occupation of such land rent free for life.
The order in this case will be revoked, but attention will be given to the case of the freedman referred to so that he does not suffer.
If his case is that of an aged pauper it will come properly under the case of the County or town overseers, or failing in their duty, it will be attended to by the Bureau on proper report

Respty returned. There are but two hospital buildings in Hampton. there is beside a building put up for quarters for the use of Surgeon in charge of hospital which is Bureau property.
These stand on one Sinclair's land for the present year free of rent.
I do not think the Bureau will need either of the two hospital buildings.
