Capt G.R. Chandler
Sir - Yours of 8th inst just to hand. The children referred to were bound to me by the officer connected with your Bureau at Lynchburg Va during last year. I left them & also the papers in the case with my father (Alex S. Gingsby living 4 miles south of Lynchburg, until I could make some arrangements to move them to this county.
I offered to give them up, but the officers in charge were unwilling to take them. As I have been compelled to keep them this long, I think if I do have to give them up now, I ought to have the amount necessarily expended upon them returned.
Their mother (Betsey Brown) left me under suspicious circumstances. She was acting as nurse to my youngest child which died the day before she left, and bore pretty strong evidence of having been poisoned. I do not know that the evidence would be strong enough to convict her, but it would certainly justify her arrest & trial. She remained within reach of her children for months, but never made any effort to recover them, to my knowledge.
