Mr Bachus's informant is strangely in error. The Baptist teachers closed their school without exhibition and attended as spectators the exhibition of the Camp Davis schools.
The Baptist Church (colored) used by the Baptist teachers as school house was burned along with some private houses by catching fire from a large wooden tobacco factory which burned to the ground. The only charge of incendiarianism heard of here was against the factory it having a large insurance on it.
The colored people had time to remove pews &c from the church before it was destroyed.
Hundreds of them were present before the church caught fire. The whites are contributing freely for the erection of a new church on the old site
The trustees had their subscription papers written by this office and assured it that the new building would be a much finer structure than the old, and would be energetically pushed forward to completion. None of them made any charge of incendiarianism other than above.
The Asst Com'r may rest assured that had not the fire been purely accidental the matter would have been promptly reported to him by this office at the time.
