Respectfully returned to Maj Genl J M Schofield Asst Com'r.
From personal investigation it appears that the trial of this case was not concluded by the "Board of Agents" of Augusta County before the suspension of its functions by order of the asst Com'r.
The affidavit of Thornton arrived subsequently. but was of no use to a court whose functions had been suspended. It is respectfully recommended that Lt Cook Asst Supt be directed to furnish Harrison with the evidence of Thornton now in possession of the Bureau, and to advise him to prosecute his claim before the proper County or State Courts.

Maize, are not living in Lisbon Va, as stated. I have made all effort possible to find out their whereabouts by enquiring of both white and colored citizens of the place and vicinity. But no one knows anything about them. If Mrs Cross will find out to whom she formerly belonged when a slave, and let me know, I can find her

Respectfully returned with the remark that I simply asked that Lt Sweeney be relieved, believing that the interests of the Freedmen and the Bureau would thereby be promoted. I did not wish to injure the reputation or standing of this Officer and consequently abstained from making a detailed report of the reasons why I made this request.
Lieut Sweeney's course as Asst Supt tended to promote strife between the whites and the Freedmen
He made some of the Freedmen dissatisfied with contracts which he had himself approved.
He threatened that next year only certain persons in the county should be able to procure labor and that his influence with the Freedmen would enable him to carry out his threat.
He had money transactions with the Freedmen and I had reason to believe, took advantage of their ignorance to defraud them. I have delayed returning these papers in order to procure the affidavits of persons cognizant of his doings, which papers are enclosed, Viz: Document enclosed marked A contains the certificate of P. C. Derrett & J. G. Dulaney
