arises from a desire to renew their allegiance to the Government they would destroy; at heart they are as far from thinking well of the union and it preservers as when in open arms against us. Little protection would be given the unionist and freedman should the military be withdrawn before the State is thoroughly reconstructed. With reference to the cause of temperance among the freed people of this Division, I will state that no backward step has been taken since the work commenced. I shall endeavor to have temperance meetings held in various portions of the Division during the succeeding month.
