care for the destitute freedpeople but without success, and as they fail to make provision for the very many indigent whites, many of whom are the [[strikethrough]]d[[/strikethrough]] widows, orphans or maimed soldiers of the Rebel Army I think it unreasonal to expect them to aid a class against whom their prejudices are so intense, because the Congress of the U.S. have made them civilly & politically equal, that they do not seem willing to grant them as much care & protection as they extend to dumb-brutes 

But very few cases of assault have been reported by Freedmen against white citizens during the month; the result of the Presidential election was very beneficial for a time, but its effect must be only temporary unless some efficient means are adopted by the Government to sustain the Civil equality of the colored men:

The Freedmen's Schools in Chesterfield County are all in a prosperous condition and are mainly sustained by colored people.
