Reports that at County Court (Nelson Co) 4 freedmen were tried for stealing tobacco. In one case the employer engaged counsel in behalf of accused and gave bail for his appearance at next court.
One proved an alibi and was discharged
Two were sentenced to the penitentiary one for 3 years and the other for 3 years and and seven months testimony of Freedmen were taken person acquitted proved an Alibi by cold woman.
Asks to be allowed to engage counsel to be paid by Bureau turning over all costs to civil authorities has had good effect on the freedmen
