powerless and cannot give these injured men any aid or comfort.

I consider the suspension of the Freedmans court as most unfortunate. The civil rights bill is of no material benefit. The right to testify in court is no advantage when judges and jurymen are, as a class, prejudiced against the witness, are brought up to believe he has no rights which they are bound to respect and declare they will believe only as much of "nigger testimony" as they choose. 

The freedmen's troubles seem to be increasing; their silence is not strange for they are used to suffering in silence, and it is hoped that some relief is before them.
