Commonwealth vs. Carey Brooks (col'd) Accused of felony and larceny. Confessed his guilt of breaking the store but said confession was ruled out by the judge. Evidence convicting otherwise. Prisoner ably defended by A H Gray Atty at Law but convicted and and sentenced 2 years on each indictment to State Penitentiary.

Commonwealth vs. Stephen Davis (col'd) Accused of Horse stealing and larceny. Was ably defended by Thomas H Tutwiler Esq. Jury found him not guilty; but recommended a recommittal for misdemeanor, in that the prisoners guilt was proven of stealing chickens. Judge made the case bailable.

The action of the Court and all officers, and jurors was very magnanimous and praiseworthy. toward colored criminals. Colored evidence, in all cases admitted and due consideration given. Judge Sheffey's charge to the Grand jury was very appropriate and his action in guarding the prisoners in every point of law, or any advantage that could be granted in their favor through ignorance was truly noble. His remarks, while passing sentence, had a marked effect upon all classes and I trust will result in much good. In all cases were character. is proven satisfactory its full credit is given by the Courts and jurors.

It looks like there is some sort of professional title after the lawyers names that I can't make out. There are words I either couldn't quite make out or couldn't make out at all. I denoted those with [[?]] to be re-transcribed.
