Major
In compliance with circular No 10 dated Hd Qrs Asst Comr Va Richmond Va March 12th 1866, I have the honor to report that I attended the Examination of John Butler & John Johnson (colored) before the county court for the murder of Henry Clay Lee (colored) The Court selected two of the best lawyers at the bar to defend the prisoners

They were both sent on for trial before the Circuit Court next April. The Evidence is of a strong circumstantial character against Butler. Johnson is supposed to be an accomplice but I believe he will be acquitted. This is the only criminal trial that has occured in this Sub Dist during the past month

I am Major Very Respectfully
