to also present himself, both as a witness, and to see how matters went and I likewise told him, in case Hudson had not appeared, to them, himself formally request of Mr Lunsford to take the requisite steps to have him arrested &c; and, after that, to also see the Bureau officer in charge of Roanoke Co., and put him in possession of all the facts in the case, so as that he might be able to give it his attention, there; and then to return & notify me of the result.

On the evening of the 22nd he again appeared, and stated that Hudson had never gone to Roanoke & that Mr Lunsford had said that a warrant such as was required would have to be issued in Franklin Co., and that it could not be issued at all, except on the appearance of and oath being made by the party himself who had been injured. The Bureau officer, the freedman said he could not find. He was told that he had gone to Hd. Qrs., at Richmond. I now adressed him to again call on Mr. J.H Bernard J.P.- I herewith likewise submit a second paper addressed in answer by him to me, which will be found marked "E" On its receipt I advised Woods to once more go to Roanoke Co. & again see Mr Lunsford; and on his still refusing to take any action in the matter to call on all the other Magistrates in the immediate neighborhood; then return here bringing [[strikethrough]]the[[/strikethrough]] with him the names of the several person to whom he had been, and put me in possession of the facts.
