safe. And is the man who would have committed murder - simple because he is white - to go unpunished.

There is not a shadow of an excuse for his not having taken and a warrant & getting a proper officer of the law to execute it. After the horse was missed, and just before starting in pursuit he called himself, on Mr. J. H. Bernard, who is a justice of the peace. It is true a warrant ostensibly for the arrest of the prisoner, was subsequently issued by that magistrate hearing date, the 16th. I herewith also submit a copy of the formal commitment to jail on the 18th marked H. This paper was likewise in the hand writing of Mr. Bernard, but was signed by Mr. John I Saunders, J.P.

The next day he was arrested and taken off to the army as a Deserter.

In a suit brought some time ago by Mr. Wm.
