Peace and request him to recognize Smith to go before the next Grand Jury which will meet only in August; and if he does not do that (which now of course he will not) then appear again in person, as before. Soon after, I saught an interview with the presiding Judge of the Court, Viz -
"Gustavous A. Wingfield"; and stated the facts to him; remarking that I regretted much this disposition on the part of certain Magistrates and Grand Juries, at this time [[strikethrough]] particularly [[\strikethrough]] more especially, to slight such offenses and not deal impartially with the colored people.  The Judge censured very highly the action of the Grand Jury and said that if the woman would come before him, that he would see that her case was taken in hand.

The woman, who lived fifteen miles off, having left for her home, I sent her word to return, if she could; but I presume, since she did not do so that, she either did not receive my message, or otherwise was unable to endure any more walking.

The following are the names of the persons composing the Grand Jury.
