I have the honor to report that there were no freedmen tried in Surry County during the month and only one in Sussex. Joseph Taylor tried upon the charge of steeling two hogs the property of Joseph Dillard. The evidence went to show that Joseph Taylor lived upon the plantation of said Dillard and that Dillard missed two of his hogs and upon search found them in the possession of Joseph Taylor he having just killed them

The only excuse he could give for having them in his possession was that he had purchased them from a white man that come along the road in a cart. The jury found him guilty and sentenced him to Sixty (60) days confinement
