Judge Watson, however, thought that the prisoner was responsible for voluntarily producing this state of mind, by his excessively intemperate habits, and directed that he be kept confined in the jail for the term of one year unless he should give security in the sum of one thousand dollars for his future good behavior, which security he is unable to furnish, and remains in jail.  

It was proved upon the trial that Thompson had had four or five attacks of mania a potu previous to the time of the killing. 

The other case referred to was that of Gilbert Branch (colored) indicted for burglary and shooting at W.O. Nesbit with intent to kill &c.  Owing to informalities in the indictment, the Judge (Watson) instructed the jury to acquit the accused which was done.  Branch was then re-arrested on the charge of shooting with intent to kill, but he has been discharged by Judge Watson on a writ of Habeas Corpus, it being shown that he had once been tried for the same offence and acquitted.
