Reports in compliance with Circular No 10. Hd. Qrs. Asst. Comr. Dist of Va that there has been but one criminal trial of Freedmen in his Div. during the present month. Viz: [[underline]]Commonwealth vs. Paul Carter[[/underline] charge with an attempt to commit rape upon a White Woman. tried at the last term of County Court, and although the [[underline]]Commonwealths Attorney[[/underline] remarked to him after the jury retired, that he thought they must acquit him as there was no evidence to sustain the charge, they brought in a [[underline]] verdict of 3 years in the Penitentiary[[/underline]], on motion of Counsel he was granted a new trial.
