"Claims $2. Two dollars collected from him as tax by the Defendant."
The Defendant, is the sheriff of the County and the tax is a poll tax. under  the statute of the state, upon all male, persons of the age of 16. and upwards. In the absence of any instructions of the subject, the court were of the opinion, as  this tax was levied before laid upon Free men, and slaves alike, and as it is to be in part expended for the support of the poor, of whom the Freedmen will hereafter furnish, a proportion. that it was proper to make the collection.
