The plea of Ashlock in this case is that Farenholt took a steer of his (Ashlock) and driven it off and wrongfully claimed it.

Live in James City Co. upper end
Bred and born there.  And farming and Oystering, Least an ox. 
Least March 5 years this month went to buy an ox of Farenholt. Bargained to give 25 dollars Secesh money.  Paid $20. to Luther Farenholt when I got the ox. Afterwards sent $5.00 by [[strikethrough]]Walt[[/strikethrough]] William [[strikethrough]]Auchehet[[/strikethrough]] Whiting. It was sent back.  Got the steer in March. Sent again $6.00 it was sent back. It was sent next spring by Washington [[N?]]atchez. Was hauling swine at the time.  Know no reason why the money was sent back. Mr. Farenholt come to my house and said he was going to carry the steer away. Said I might keep the steer if I would pay two barrels of corn. I agreed to pay it. He sent for the corn but I was away. I went to Baltimore.  When I came back the steer was gone.  Mr. F. said when he got the
