James Talifero (cold.) vs John Johnson (white)
Charge Slander.
James Talifero being duly sworn states. I went aboard his (Johnsons) sloop to give a letter to a colored man working there and asked Johnson to read it to him, he asked me if I was a constable he ordered me off his vessel cursed and swore at me and called me a damned thief and a robber.
John Johnson being duly sworn states the plaintiff came aboard my vessel whilst my men were hard to work and was interfering with them. I ordered him to leave but did not call him a thief or a robber.
Garret Howard (white) being duly sworn states, I was aboard the sloop when the plaintiff was there heard everything that was said but did not hear Johnson call him a thief or robber.
William Belvin (white) being duly sworn states. James came aboard the sloop with a letter he wanted read Johnson told him he had better keep ashore and not trouble his men, did not hear Johnson call him a thief or a robber.
The Court unanimously decided to dismiss the case
