States that he has two cold. children both bastards which he has raised, their mother being dead & now that they are old enough to assist him & in a measure repay the expense & trouble of raising them, a freedman, Jeff McGowan, who claims to be their Father, wishes to take them from him.  The Provost Marshall at Brooklawn ordered him to keep them but McGowan not being satisfied, is going to Williamsburg to get authority to remove them.  He was not married to the mother & is not in a condition to support them, which fact together with the above statement is certified by Messers Josiah Holmes, B.B.W. Lee, B.L. Fontainbury, J.D. Holmes, W.G. Holems, & others (citizens) of Pike Co. Miss. |

Respectfully returned to Bvt. Capt. Woodward. These men are entitled to enlistment bounty of $100.00/100 if he has never received it, and also additional bounty of $100.00/100. Blanks upon which to make out his claim will be forwarded as soon as received. Attention is invited to enclosed Circular letter which will be complied with in future.
