Respectfully returned to Maj W.R. Morse Supt 4th Dist. From information derived from Mary Harris employed by Mrs Lawrence as nurse during the years '63 & '64. She says "I know John Ely & Elizabeth well I regard them as unkind unmerciful & unnatural parents. I have often heard the other servants speak of the cruelty and severity of punishment by John to his children. I have heard the stifled cries as when the mouth of the child is stopped by force to

prevent them being heard & heavy blows from John Ely on his children. This has occurred often to my knowledge I have often heard Louisa (the cook) threaten to tell Mr Lawrence of his cruelty if he did not desist.
I have often known John & his wife to send their little children out after night in the cold & rain to gather wood and draw water. The latter I regarded as dangerous as it took the full strength of grown persons to turn the windlass. I have known grown persons knocked down by the windlass slipping from their hands. John & wife sitting quietly by the fire whilst their children were thus exposed. I have manytimes been awakened at night by Mrs Lawrence & sent to the quarter to feed the infant child to suppress its cries whilst its parents John & Elizabeth were out visiting or spending the night without leaving any one to take care of it. I have known John to have money frequently but never knew him to give to one of his the least article or favor."
From information obtained of Charles Powell (white) on the same night that Mr Lawrence's horses were stolen, he says that he met John with the horses about nine miles from Mr Lawrence's on the way to Richmond, recognized John Ely and the horses, halted him but John at once whirled about with the horses & made off the other direction as hard as he could go. He knew but little of Johns character except as was the common talk, which corroborates the statements of Mary Harris, col'd.
