Sub Dist Bedford & Bottetourt Cos
Liberty Va Feb 2d 1867

Respectfully returned to Capt R. S. Lacy Supt &c
Attention invited to copy of my endorsement on same case dated Fincastle Aug 18th 1866.
"Young Hinkle picked up the Gov't mule after General Hunter's raid and kept it until after the surrender. When Capt Eastman was assigned to this county as Asst Pro Marshal, he took the mule from Hinkle as he had no use for it. and turned it over to Hines to assist him in making a crop. Young Hinkle is living with his father. who has several Govt horses in his possession now, but they don't seem to be satisfied with them. The person who wrote the enclosed letter is a young lawyer of this place. and is trying to make a business out of these cases. he is prosecuting a suit in court against a man. similar to his one now."_ Capt Eastman took the mule from Mr Hinkle by order of General Gregg, and turned it over to Mr Hines for a poor widow lady in whose name the mule is registered as Govt property, and it seems to me Mr Figget's assertion is very contradictory as regards to the worthlessness of the mule.
Why should Mr Anderson have wanted the mule for a short time, if it was of no account.
