Alonzo Smith Sg'd Ira Ayers Jr Bvt Col & Asst Supt Copy of Certificate This is to certify that I have this day examined a negro girl Matilda apprenticed to Mr. B.F. Vaughn and find her suffering with disease of the mesenteric glands. (Tabes Mesenterica) and also with diseased lungs. The disease is not contagious according to my experience. Bates Supt 3d Dist Dept of the Potomac with the information that upon inquiries being made at the "Bank of Virginia" I find that the whole of their books were destroyed by the fire at the evacuation. They have no knowledge of the stock-holders and are unable to say who hold stock. Every stockholder was furnished with bond, and coupons attached, and the applicant will have to furnish some evidence of deposit. The Bank of Richmond has only been in existence since 1860 and is now insolvent, 89 they have no knowledge of such a stock holder and even if it could be proved that such stock existed it is now entirely worthless.
